One of the most important characteristics of today's urban formation of Sibenik is its historic urban center developed gradually during centuries. From today's double wall in Dolac near cathedral in the south part of the sheer hill near sea next to the fortress (Castrum) first urban tissue was created.
That is Sibenik of the second half of XI.century. During XII century development of town began on southeast side and by the end of that century included the area around fort Sv. Ana and nowdays Benedictine monastery of Sv.Lucija all the way to Dobric. That was the line of the ancient town wall in the year of 1200.
Until 1322 town was surrounded by wall that finished on the coast near church and monastery of Sv. Frane. In the XV Century the architectural development was intensified (famous architects Juraj Dalmatinac i Nikola Firentinac). Beside the magnificent cathedral, in the XV century, many other churches are build as well as noble palaces and squares and streets are regulated and town walls are reinforced.
Architectural activity is continuing in the XVI ct when Sibenik gets its final space organisation with new structure and quality of town plan.
In the XVI ct Sibenik gets its final space organisation with emphasis on town walls with fort of Sv. Ana and final forms of upper parts of the cathedral. Age of baroque did not change that immage. Historic town agglomeration is formed of areas of Dolac, Gorica and Grad.
